AWSD gets federal nutrition grant

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative is awarding almost $30 million dollars in grants to 264 school districts to improve school nutrition, and one of those grants is going to the Athena-Weston School District.
“With these funds, small and rural school districts will be able to modernize their operations and provide more nutritious meals, helping students succeed in the classroom and beyond,” USDA Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small said.
Each district will receive up to $150,000. The Athena-Weston School District will receive $27,000.
The USDA listed numerous examples of how the money can be spent. They include kitchen updates and renovations, innovative staff training programs, and redesigning food preparation and service spaces.
