Mammoth Springs Campground Vandalism and Dead Cattle Appear to be Connected

BAKER COUNTY – (Release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On July 9, 2023, at approximately 11:18 a.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding two cattle that were shot in the Mammoth Springs area near Unity.
Deputy Ebeling responded to the area and made contact with the reporting party and owner of the cattle, William Moore. Upon arrival, Deputy Ebeling located one cow deceased from a gunshot wound and another cow in the process of dying from a gunshot wound. Both cows were nursing calves. During the investigation, it was determined that the cattle were most likely shot with a high-powered handgun or rifle on the evening of July 8th. No shell casings were located.
During this timeframe, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer Betts discovered that a restroom in the Mammoth Springs Campground was severely damaged after being vandalized with a shotgun or handgun. As with the cattle incident, no shell casings were located at the restroom.
It is believed that these two incidents are connected.
