MISSION – During a recent ribbon cutting on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, it was announced that Oregon Housing and Community Services is sending more than $3 million to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to build houses in the Nixyaawii Neighborhood.
“We got $3 million of the $5 million or so that the agency gave out,” CTUIR Public Relations Specialist Chris Aadland said. “That’s going to be used to build 20 or 21 houses.”
The ribbon cutting was for the Timine Way North apartments, and the subdivision. Nixyaawii Neighborhood will offer people 99 year leases on Tribal land, allowing them to build an down their own homes. The new funding will allow the building to begin in the near future.
“Once they’re completed, those houses will be sold to a Tribal member,” Aadland said.
Several new funding streams have opened up for CTUIR in recent months including money for down payment assistance for Tribal members to buy their own homes.
