WWFD team returns after fighting Canadian wildfire

WALLA WALLA – Walla Walla Fire Department Capt. Todd Stubblefield is home after spending 19 days assisting in fighting the Nipisi Complex in Alberta. In mid-May, he traveled 925 miles to Canada with other WWFD members trained and credentialed to offer the assistance needed.
“The team was responsible for managing hand crews,” Stubblefield said. “We traveled to the site every day by helicopter as it was extremely remote. “
Stubblefield said despite the physical distance and challenging circumstances, the collaboration between the Walla Walla Fire Dept. and the Canadian firefighting teams was exemplary. He added that the dedication and hard work of the team in protecting both human and natural resources were deeply appreciated by the Canadian people.
“Overall, the experience of the Walla Walla Fire Department in assisting Alberta, Canada, in fighting the wildland fires was a remarkable display of humanity and cooperation,” Stubblefield said. “It is a great example of how reaching out and helping others in need can make a positive impact on the world.”
At last report, the Nipisi Complex of wildfires was at more than 44,000 acres. It was started by lightning on May 4.
