Red Cross Recommendations on Preparing Pets for Disaster Evacuations

EASTERN OREGON – (Information from the American Red Cross – Cascades Region) Wildfire season is underway. In the worst-case scenarios, evacuation and potentially even displacement may occur. In the most extreme of circumstances, evacuation may need to be conducted quickly and on short notice. In such cases, it may be easy to forget that pets need to be prepared for just as much as people. To help keep the evacuation process smooth for everyone involved, be they on four legs or two, the American Red Cross Cascades Region has several reminders for pet owners:

  1. If it’s not safe for you to stay in your home during an emergency, it’s not safe for pets either!
  2. Include supplies for your pet in your emergency kit or assemble an emergency kit for your pet.
  3. Make an evacuation plan for you and your pets. Many hotels and shelters do not accept animal guests, other than service animals.

In addition, the Red Cross also recommends preparing the following items in advance:

  • Sturdy leashes, harnesses and/or carriers to transport pets safely.
  • Food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter/pan and a manual can opener if you pet eats canned food.
  • Medications/copies of medical records stored in a waterproof container. Vet’s number.
  • Current photos of you with your pet(s) in case they get lost. Since many pets look alike, this will help to eliminate mistaken identity and confusion.
  • Pet beds and toys, if easily transportable.
