LOSTINE – (Information from the Oregon Department of Forestry) Crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Northeast Oregon District, U.S. Forest Service and Wallowa Rural Fire Protection District responded to a lightning caused grass fire near Lostine on Wednesday. As described by the ODF:
“The lightning fire was carried by the dead grass from last year that was under the green grass from this spring and pushed by gusty winds. The fire behavior was uncharacteristically aggressive for this time of year. Firefighters reported flame lengths exceeding six feet in height.”
In total, the fire burned 49.2 acres. Firefighters were on scene within 15 minutes after the initial report and consisted of three engines from the ODF, two engines from the Forest Service and a water tender from Wallowa. Crews were in the mop-up stage as of Thursday afternoon.
