UMATILLA – The Umatilla High School CommuniCare Committee just enjoyed what they call the most fun part of their process. They awarded $15,000 to local organizations to provide opportunities for young people in the city of Umatilla.
Umatilla Little League received $2,500. Made to Thrive got $5,000. Thriving Elements received $7,500. UHS CommuniCare decided to focus funding on opportunities for young people, especially those who may not be able to afford activities in their school or community. The committee is comprised of 18 Umatilla High School students.
Umatilla Little League organizes baseball and softball leagues for young people in the city. The program is reigniting its mission after it was impacted by COVID-19.
Made to Thrive seeks to empower children by supporting them in sports, music, and arts. The organization also helps cover equipment costs and provides transportation to a variety of sports, adventure activities, music, and art for vulnerable youths.
Thriving Elements has a goal of developing and empowering female leaders in STEM to make a positive impact on their communities and inspire the next generation of young women. They connect young females with volunteer mentors who support them throughout high school, to college, and employment.
CommuniCare Chairman Kaidan Blair said the committee agreed that all three organizations perfectly fulfill the group’s mission to reach out to young people living in Umatilla. CommuniCare raised $750 for the grants through a variety of fundraisers including a Halloween Haunted House. That made them eligible for a $15,000 grant from CommuniCare Oregon. The state group exists to help students realize the needs of their communities and to develop leadership skills through applying for and making grants.
