Three Mounties Earn Athlete of the Week Awards

LA GRANDE – (Release from Eastern Oregon University) The Cascade Collegiate Conference announced the latest installment of Rize Laboratory Players of the Week on Monday afternoon. Three Mountaineers earned the title thanks to their performances from April 10 through the 16. Two came from the women’s track and field team who swept the award on both the track and field side. Maggie Ledbetter was named the CCC Field Athlete of the Week for her performances in the throws while Michelle Herbes earned the award for her performance in the 1,500-Meter Run. On the softball field, it was Kaylie Hoskins who was named CCC Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season after another dominant weekend in the circle.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete – Maggie Ledbetter (Left)
Ledbetter, a graduate student from Cove, Ore., had a monster weekend at the Northwest Nazarene University Open. She became the national leader in the Shot Put with a first place “A” standard mark of 14.57m. She then hit another “A” standard in the Hammer Throw with a mark of 50.55m to finish in second place behind her teammate. She wrapped up her dominant performances with a top place finish and a “B” standard in the Discus with a mark of 42.69m. Both scores also rank in the top 20 nationally. The award is her second of the outdoor season.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete – Michelle Herbes (Center)
Eastern Oregon University Michelle Herbes was named the Rize Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Herbes, a graduate student from Union, Oregon, had an excellent weekend against strong NCAA Division I competition at the Lewis & Clark Invitational. She set a school record in the 1500 Meter Run posting an “A” Standard time of “4:32.58” while taking third out of 71 competitors.
“What an outstanding weekend for the two fifth year seniors,” Head Coach Ben Welch said. “Both were already performing very well this season and kicked things up another notch!”
Softball – Pitcher – Kaylie Hoskins (Right)
Hoskins, a sophomore pitcher from Lake Stevens, Wash., got three more wins on the mound in the Mountaineers series sweep of Northwest University. In 15 innings she struck out 28 batters while only allowing one hit and one walk in each game. No runs were scored while she was in the circle to hold a perfect weekend ERA and become EOU’s new strikeout leader. This week’s award marks her fourth of the season.
“It was a great weekend for Kaylie with a tough hitting Northwest team,” Head Coach Nicole Christian said. “She was able to keep them off balance while in the circle.”
