WALLA WALLA – Anyone who has recently visited Pioneer Park may have noticed signs reminding park visitors not to feed the geese and squirrels. Walla Walla Parks and Recreation staff recently placed signs in the park.

The population of geese has grown to a level which has become a public health issue with the amount of feces left behind in the park. The geese also damage the turf throughout the park and have been reported to be aggressive towards small children.

In addition, the squirrel population in the park continues to expand. Squirrels eat the new growth bark on many of the large trees in the park thus impacting the trees’ health. The city arborist indicates there is significant damage caused to the trees in Pioneer Park by the squirrels.

Walla Walla Parks and Recreation staff believes if steps aren’t taken to discourage these animals from making the park their home, the population of geese and squirrels will continue to grow, and the problems will only worsen.
