WALLULA – A man who was hiking along at Twin Sisters Rock in Wallula Gap Monday fell about 20 feet, severely injuring both of his ankles. The injured hiker was behind the rock formations, approximately 1.5 miles south of the trailhead parking lot located off U.S. 730.

A woman, who happened to make an unplanned stop to hike up the trail for a sunset picture, heard the injured hiker’s cry from help. She reached the injured hiker and called 911.

“If it wasn’t for her, we don’t think anyone would have found or heard him,” Walla Walla County Fire District No. 5 Chief Mike Wickstrom said. “He couldn’t reach his phone or jacket after the fall.”

Medics transported the injured hiker to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington. Walla Walla County fire districts No. 5 and 6, along with medics from the Walla Walla Fire Department and deputies from the Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office responded.
