WALLA WALLA – Firefighters rescued a man early Saturday morning from a residential structure fire on the 900 block of West Chestnut Street. Medics transported the man to Providence St. Mary Medical Center for further care. No further details on the man’s condition or injuries were released.
The Walla Walla Fire Department was dispatched at 1:02 a.m. and when crews arrived, smoke was showing from all sides of the structure. No other structures were threatened. Firefighters determined an occupant was still inside and immediately went to work to get him out. No additional injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
The accidental fire cause is listed as undetermined. However, WWFD said all indications point to an overloaded extension cord powering a space heater.
Damage to property and contents is estimate at $52,000.
WWFD said the residence had no working smoke detectors.
