Wounded trooper says thank you

WALLA WALLA – Washington State Patrol Trooper Dean Atkinson Jr. finally got a chance to say thank you to Walla Walla Emergency Services Communications’ 911 dispatchers and Providence St. Mary Medical Center staff. Atkinson, along with members of the Washington State Patrol, recently met with those who helped save his life after he was shot in the line of duty on Sept. 22 near Avery Street and West Poplar Street in Walla Walla.

“Both Trooper Atkinson and the Washington State Patrol expressed their thanks to the WESCOM 911 dispatchers for their calm, professional and smooth handling of the multitude of phone calls, radio traffic, and stress involved in the critical incident,” Manager Steven Ruley said.

Atkinson was allegedly shot by Brandon Dennis O’Neel, 37, of Walla Walla, who local law enforcement evicted from his apartment earlier that same day. After being shot, he remained conscious and alert and drove himself to the hospital.

“A significant amount of information exchange was involved, both into and out of the dispatch center which was caused by the urgent needs of the injured trooper coupled with the immediate need to identify, locate and detain the responsible party for this horrific event,” Ruley added.

O’Neel fled the area and was later taken into custody on State Route 125 south of Old Milton Highway. He faces five felony charges which include first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and attempting to elude a pursuing vehicle, all with firearm enhancements; threats to bomb or injure property; and harassment. He is currently being held in the Walla Walla County Jail on a $1 million dollar bond. O’Neel’s trial is set for Jan. 24, 2023.
