HEPPNER – Separate recall petitions have been filed with the Morrow County Clerk’s Office for two of the three county commissioners – Jim Doherty and Melissa Lindsey. Each petition appears on the surface to have more than the required number of signatures, but they have to be validated by the clerk.
“I don’t know how far along they are, but I know it’s not an easy process to do,” Morrow County Counsel Justin Nelson said. “They received two different batches and they have to review both signature packets to see if there are sufficient numbers.”
If a petition bears enough valid signatures, then the person being recalled has five days to decide if they will simply resign. If they chose not to quit, a special election is held within the ensuing 30 days.
Nelson stressed that this issue will not be on the General Election ballot in November. It will require a separate vote of the people, as those ballots have already been printed. More information about the recall petitions can be obtained from the Morrow County Clerk’s Office at the courthouse in Heppner.
