KENNEWICK – A police operation between the Kennewick and Richland police, along with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office to track down “top offenders” led to an officer-involved shooting and standoff Tuesday night.
At 6:18 p.m., while in the area of the 5200 block of West Clearwater Avenue, a KPD detective observed Anthony Logan Martinez-Mata, 26, wanted on a felony assault charge involving a firearm and also known to have several felony warrants.
Upon attempting to contact Martinez-Mata, he fled from a uniformed KPD officer into an apartment complex, but not before presenting a gun and firing multiple shots at the officer. The officer returned fire.
Martinez-Mata then retreated an entered an apartment of an unknown resident. The resident of the apartment fled out a back window and contacted police. Police were able to contain Martinez-Mata to the apartment.
Additional law enforcement, including the Tri-City Regional SWAT team responded to the area. After negotiating with Martinez-Mata, he was taken into custody at 8:35 p.m. and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The KPD officer was unharmed during the incident.
Following standard protocols, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was activated by Kennewick Police Chief Chris Guerrero. SIU will begin an independent investigation. Any additional information will be released by the SIU.
