Wallowa County – (Release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture) The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest is pleased to announce that the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) for the Hells Canyon Natural Resource Area (HCNRA) are now available. Members of the public can pick-up a copy of the maps at any of the Wallowa-Whitman offices or visitor centers for free, or download a free copy from Avenza Maps to their mobile device.
The HCNRA MVUMs show the roads and trails, where forest visitors can take highway legal vehicles (such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUVs and motorcycles) and off highway vehicles (such as ATVs, UTVS – or side by sides, off road motorcycles, etc.) as designated by the HCNRA Comprehensive Management Plan in 2003. Routes not depicted on the MVUM are not authorized for travel by wheeled motorized vehicles.
To view the maps on your mobile device please download Avenza Maps, then scan the QR code. The Avenza free mobile app makes it easy to download forest maps onto your mobile device. For detailed information about using Avenza Maps please see these tutorials for IOS devices and for Android devices.
Alternately, you can visit Avenza Maps online, navigate to ‘get maps now’, enter ‘Wallowa Whitman National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map – Hells Canyon National Recreation Area’ and download the map to your mobile device.Much of the HCNRA is remote, and medical assistance may not be readily available. Cellular telephones do not work in many areas of the HCNRA. Visitors should take adequate food, water, first aid supplies, and other equipment appropriate for the conditions and expected weather. For more information or to provide feedback on specific routes within HCNRA, please call one of the Wallowa-Whitman offices or email the Forest here.
