LA GRANDE – (Release from Eastern Oregon University) Eastern Oregon University Volleyball earned the first Cascade Collegiate Conference Team of the Week award of the 2022 season. The Under Armor sponsored award goes to the most outstanding team in the conference each week.
“We are excited to receive the first Team of the Week award for the 2022-2023 academic year,” Coach Kaki McLean Morehead said. “Thank you to the Cascade Conference and Under Armor for continuing to sponsor this award.”
The Mounties claim the award thanks to their impressive efforts at the Big Sky Challenge on Aug. 18 and 19 held in Butte, Mont. Although EOU dropped their first game to No. 9 Viterbo, they responded incredibly well with three straight wins, and back-to-back wins over two of the nation’s top five teams.
Eastern took the second game of the Big Sky Challenge against No. 5 ranked Midland University in dominant fashion. They utilized a couple of big runs in a sweep taking all three against Midland, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-17.
In their third appearance of the tournament, EOU put up an arguably more impressive performance taking down the No. 2 team in the nation, University of Jamestown. After splitting the first two sets, the Mountaineers took the third set that went down to the wire, 27-25. EOU pulled away in the fourth and final set to take the match. EOU then ended the weekend with a three-set win over Carroll College.
“I’m excited to see the growth this team has had so far, but also the potential we still have,” Coach McLean Morehead said.
The Mounties sit at 3-1 on the season and will head to Missouri for the Hampton Inn Classic this coming weekend. The first game will be against #25 Ottawa (Kan.) on Friday, Aug. 26 at 8 a.m. PT.
