Storm Damage Update from Wallowa Mayor Gary Hulse

WALLOWA – While Eastern Oregon is host to a sprawling and often picturesque natural environment, the potential destructive force that is nature should never be underestimated, even in the most pristine of places. Recently, a devastating hailstorm shook the region, with the town of Wallowa suffering the brunt of it.

Though many residents are left with damaged homes, battered vehicles and no shortage of broken windows, plans are underway for relief and rebuilding according to Wallowa Mayor Gary Hulse. To survey damage, drones will soon begin fly-overs to study the condition of the town and surrounding areas. Several adjusters are also studying Wallowa in order to prepare for damage claims.

City officials are in contact with a Tri-Cities based company to provide surplus hay tarps as temporary cover for homes with significant damage. Local company Farm Supply Distributors will be responsible for transportation and distribution of the tarps. It is hoped that this will act as a sufficient stop gap until insurance and contractor negotiations can begin. Pendleton based Tum A Lum Lumber has also sent a truck loaded with building supplies.

Wallowa is continuing to ask for any able volunteers to help with cleanup and community support. A board will be set across from the library where residents can place cards with their contact info describing when they need assistance. Volunteers will be able to use these cards to find specific people and projects.

The city is also looking into financial assistance for those with limited or no insurance. Current support resources for residents include the following:

An account at the local Community Bank is taking donations under the Wallowa Storm fund.

A form to apply for $500 dollars in aid is available at the Wallowa City Hall, Wallowa Fire Department and Wallowa Senior Center. Those that qualify for SNAP and TANFF benefits may also visit the city hall ore fire department for replacement food resources.

As a reminder, the Wallowa Food Bank is open every day of the week to anyone in need regardless of eligibility.

The Wallowa ReSale Store, open Monday through Saturday 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., is offering free item replacements to Wallowa Residents.
