WALLA WALLA — Firefighters, with the assistance of farmers, have contained a fire that spread Friday afternoon through approximately 1,200 acres of standing wheat and stubble north of Walla Walla and mop up operations have begun, according to Walla Walla County Emergency Management.

The fire was first reported around 4:30 p.m. and named the Valley Grove/Van Ausdle Fire, due its proximity to Valley Grove Road and Van Ausdle Lane. A level one (be aware) evacuation notice was issued, but has since been lifted.

The fast moving fire burned near Eritage Resort located on Bergevin Springs Road where a level two evacuation order (be ready to leave at any minute) was issued. Staff released the following statement on Facebook Friday night:

“Thank you to all the volunteers and firefighters that helped protect us. To all the wheat farmers, we are sorry for your loss.”

Aside from mutual aid response from various fire departments, several farmers showed up with their tractors as well. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
