Pursuit Leads to Arrest of Lakeview Man

BAKER COUNTY – (Release from Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On July 4, 2022 at approximately 7:49 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a call of a suspicious vehicle in the ditch near Old Highway 30 and Ebell Creek. As deputies were responding to the area, the reporting party called back to let them know that a second vehicle arrived and pulled the vehicle from the ditch. The vehicle then left driving toward Baker City at a high rate of speed.

Deputies located the vehicle, a 2006 Ford Taurus, near Old Highway 30 and West Sutton Creek Road. The vehicle turned around and began driving north toward Baker City. During this time, deputies learned that the driver, Michael Ray Schulte of Lakeview, Oregon, had multiple felony warrants. Deputies began following the vehicle and activated their overhead lights. The vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and continued at a high rate of speed, ultimately entering Baker City limits via Elm Street. Baker City Police Department officers began following the vehicle. The vehicle continued driving and was located on Church Street unoccupied.

Law enforcement personnel searched along the Powder River for the driver. After approximately 30 minutes, Schulte was located in the river partially submerged.

Schulte was arrested on two felony warrants and charged with Possession of Weapons by Certain Felons, Reckless Driving, Attempt to Elude Police, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. He was transported and lodged in the Baker County Jail.
