UNION COUNTY 0 Mamas Genagretis, the man accused of murdering Deanna Badgley at their home on Robbs Hill Rd in Union County Monday, May 23rd, was arraigned in a Union County Courtroom today.  Due to supposed language barriers the court obtained a Greek language interrupter, Marie Boyer, to assist with conversing with Mr. Genagretis who appeared from the Union County Jail via video.

Mr. Genagretis, once sat down, and throughout the arraignment, was heard making various grunts and groans and appearing to not understand what was going on.  It was later noted by Union County District Attorney Kelsie McDaniel that information from law enforcement as well as jail staff suggested that Mr. Genagretis has been communicating and speaking with them while he has been in custody and this presentation during arraignment was selective.

Via the interpreter, Mr. Genagretis was informed of his rights and the forthcoming process, in regards to his charge of Murder in the second degree.

Judge Thomas Powers noted that an attorney will be appointed to Mr. Genagretis and an order was made for a Custodial Aid and Assist with a report to the court.  At the time of the arraignment, Mr. Genagretis had been seen by the Center for Human Development twice.

Mr. Genagretis will be held in the Union County Jail with no bail until an attorney is secured, at which time the attorney may request a bail hearing.

Officials involved in the arrest and investigation included the Union County Sheriff’s Office, La Grande Police Department, Oregon State Police, Major Crimes Team, Union County District Attorney, Union County Medical Examiner.
