PENDLETON – The Umatilla River North Shore Planning Committee reported to the city council this week on the work it is accomplishing. Mayor John Turner said the committee is focusing on about a mile and a half of the river from Main Street to the Bedford Bridge.
“They’re trying to get removal of downed trees and flood debris,” he said. “They also are working on designing and installing a pedestrian walking path.”
The ad hoc committee came into being when residents along the north shore objected to the city’s plan to sell a strip of land to a developer several years ago. The sale did not take place and the committee was formed.
No city funds are committed to projects being pursued by the committee. Turner said he believes the members will pursue grant funding to make things like the walking trail a reality.
