BMCC cuts threaten opportunities in Umatilla, Morrow, and Baker Counties

BAKER CITY – Blue Mountain Community College’s administration recently announced that there would be extensive cuts what the school offers. Among those cuts includes:

Eliminating programs in Criminal Justice, Industrial Systems Technology, and College Prep.
Eliminating ten full-time faculty and nineteen part-time faculty in disciplines such as Chemistry, Writing, Anthropology, Geography, Mathematics, Computer Science, Business /Accounting, and Music.

BMCC released information answering some questions regarding this situation. That information is below.

“Why are these cuts being made when the college expects revenue to increase by $300,000 in the coming academic year? The cuts announced will reduce on-campus full-time faculty by more than 30% and total on-campus faculty at the college by nearly 50%.

These cuts threaten the education and career opportunities in the BMCC service district, including Umatilla, Morrow, and Baker Counties, while removing 10 full-time and 19 part-time jobs from eastern Oregon.
