WALLA WALLA – Work will begin on Monday to reconstruct Poplar Street from Colville Street to Fifth Avenue. This will include the closure of two blocks from Second Avenue from just south of the Alder Street intersection to just south of the Birch Street intersection. Detours will be established.
One of the first parts of the project will be tree trimming along Poplar Street from Colville Street to Fifth Avenue. Next will be removal of the roadway surface on Second Avenue.
The project also includes the removal and replacement of the traffic signals on Poplar Street at the First, Third, and Fourth avenue intersections, replacing the signals with rectangular rapid flashing beacons to aid in pedestrian crossings. The lane configuration will be modified to include a single vehicle lane for each direction of travel, as well as a center two-way left turn lane, and bike lanes. Parallel parking will be maintained.
Water and sewer lines will be replaced and stormwater facilities will be improved. Second Avenue will also be reconstructed from Alder Street through Birch Street. Partial street improvements will be done on Colville Street both north and south of Poplar Street.
