HSD sets elementary school boundaries

HERMISTON – The Hermiston School District Board of Directors has set the boundaries for the city’s six elementary schools beginning with the next school year. Lines had to be redrawn due to the addition of a sixth elementary school. Superintendent Tricia Mooney said those boundaries are not etched in stone.
“We will still have our same transfer process available to families that may live in one elementary building attendance area and want to attend another,” she said.
Mooney said the board took into account the desire to maintain a neighborhood feeling to schools as well as to minimize the time children spend in school buses. Public input was also important as well.
“It has been a process that we went through over the course of this year looking at to the greatest extent possible, keeping neighborhood schools and transportation efficiencies,” Mooney said.
The life skills program at Highland Hills will be moved to Loma Vista with the new boundaries. In addition, the newcomers’ program at Highland Hills is being moved to Sunset.
“We’ll have all of our district-wide programs at the elementary level in buildings that have interior corridors,” she said.
