BAKER COUNTY – The Baker Rural Fire Protection District will ask voters to approve a five-year property tax levy in the May 17 primary election. The district didn’t file the request with Baker County’s clerk’s office until Tuesday, the last day to apply.

The paperwork for the levy states it is expected to raise $182,000 in the first year. The district is asking voters to approve a $1 property tax increase per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. While the levy is set to expire in five years, BRFD could ask voters to agree to renew it. The district does not include properties inside the Baker City limits. It covers Western Heights and much of the valley between Baker City and Haines.
