OSSA helps UCSO prep for 2022

PENDLETON – The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for 2022. Sheriff Terry Rowan said that Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Legal Counsel Elmer Dickens is in the county meeting with law enforcement to let them know what to expect when new laws go into effect.
“There’s a slew of new changes coming and it’s best to get out in front of it and what it all means,” Rowan said. “It’s a change in traditional business.”
Rowan said he is glad Dickens came to the county to meet in person and discuss those changes.
“He’s really a sharp guy,” Rowan said. “He was raised down in John Day, but his home now is on the west side of the state.”
New laws include not allowing police agencies to obtain some military surplus equipment from the federal government; cuts down on the use of tear gas and non-lethal projectiles; and requiring officers to report misconduct by their fellow officers. At least a dozen laws related to policing were passed in the 2021 session.
