WALLA WALLA โ€“ The Walla Walla City Council will consider accepting two separate grants totaling more than $1.5 million for Rose Street and Second Avenue at its meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. Both grants are Washington State Department of Transportation 2021 National Highway System Asset Management Grants.

The first, totaling $924,000, would be for pavement preservation over the full extent of Rose Street. The treatment application will be like the recent preservation treatment applied to East Isaacs Avenue, which was also grant funded. In addition, acceptance of the grant funds commits the city to turning Rose Street into three lanes. Staff will initiate project design in 2022, with construction anticipated to occur in either 2023 or 2024.

The second grant, totaling $638,000, would be used to crack seal, upgrade curb ramps and make other improvements along Second Avenue from Birch Street to Howard Street. In June, the city was notified that this project was selected for funding. Staff will initiate project design in 2022. Construction is anticipated to begin in either 2023 or 2024.

The council will also consider a city-wide pedestrian safety project construction award of $429,997 to ESF Development, LLC. The strategic plan of this project is to fix and improve the cityโ€™s infrastructure and continue work on the cityโ€™s transportation network, such as streets, sidewalks, and bridges. This citywide pedestrian safety project will also improve safety for walking, biking, transit, motor vehicles, and freight at high collision locations identified through data-driven safety analysis.

The meeting may be viewed on the cityโ€™s website or via Zoom. The ID number is 878 9506 6563.
