Mudslide forces evacuations

PENDLETON – A mudslide has forced the evacuation of three homes and a four-plex on Southeast Goodwin Avenue between Southeast Second Street and Hailey today (Saturday). Pendleton Fire & Ambulance first responders left from an earlier structure fire on Southwest Sixth Street to respond to the call.
Pendleton Public Works Director Bob Patterson reported that a water service line at a home above Southeast Goodwin on Southeast Second Street had been leaking. No one was home at that residence. The continued leak caused the mudslide which knocked one home off its foundation and filled the basement and lower areas of the second home with mud.
Water, gas, and electric utilities have been shut off in the affected area.
No one was injured. Community Development Director Tim Simons said that firefighters cut a door into one home and successfully rescued a dog. Patterson said attempts are being made to locate the residents of the home where the service line was leaking and a note has been left on the door as well.
