EASTERN OREGON – The New Year started out with wild weather, from drifting snow, closed roadways, and power outages. Many of the School Districts in the region were closed due to slippery roads. The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts up to 70 miles-per-hour at times, keeping snow plows busy. Motorists were driving around road closures and becoming stranded on snow covered routes. Several highways were closed and ODOT crews were not able to perform winter maintenance operations due to high winds, snowdrifts, blowing snow and limited visibility. ODOT says if you are planning on traveling in eastern Oregon, plan for long delays.
