JOHN DAY – ODFW John Day District Wildlife Biologist Ryan Torland was in the studio recently and said (without surprise to many) the number of wolves in Grant County has been increasing over the last several years. He said that we’ll have a better idea of the current number within the county once the data is collected. Biologists are in the process of that now:
“Here over the next several weeks, we have trail cameras set out that we’ll be checking. We’ll be getting our information based off of that trail camera information.
We do that this time of year, because we kind of assume—especially if they had pups—that if they get recruited through the calendar year, then they’re included in the population estimate.”
Torland said the annual Grant County “wolf count” as well as the number within the State of Oregon should be released sometime in March.
