WALLA WALLA – Firefighters presume improper disposal of ashes from a home’s wood stove started a fire that damaged a two-story home Wednesday night in Walla Walla, although the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Crews responded to the 800 block of Dow Drive just before 11 p.m. and found the exterior of the home was on fire. All residents safely got out of the house. There were no injuries reported to firefighters or the home’s occupants.
Damage is estimated at $6,520 and the Walla Walla Fire Department reminds residents the importance of properly disposing of ashes. Allow ashes to cool before disposing them, always place ashes in a metal container, and keep the container at least 10 feet away from homes and other structures.
