WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council meets today (Monday) at 4 p.m. for a work session. The agenda will begin with a presentation on the First Avenue Plaza conceptual design. First Avenue Plaza was created in the summer of 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic when the city took the opportunity to close the street and covert the space to a temporary public plaza. Throughout the changing restrictions to combat the pandemic, the plaza became a location where the community could gather safely outside.

With overwhelming support for making the plaza permanent, the city is moving forward with this project. The space will include new pedestrian surfacing, possible gas and electric connections to support a variety of community events in the plaza, and moveable landscaping to provide shade during the summer days.

Design began in September and will be completed in early 2022. Construction is anticipated to begin next spring with a goal of completion set for mid-summer 2022.

The council will also review proposed amendments to the city’s municipal code regarding subdivisions, zoning, and water and wastewater utilities. The proposed amendments include adding clarifications, correcting errors in language, and removing sections that are no longer applicable.

The work session will be streamed on the city’s website and via Zoom. The meeting ID number is 827 0878 1017.
