CPPS considers consolidating levies

COLLEGE PLACE – The College Place Public Schools Board of Directors discussed the renewal of three expiring levies at a special work session held Wednesday. The board must approve a resolution for the levies and submit it to the Walla Walla County Elections Office by Friday, Dec. 10.
The discussion centered around the expiring four-year Educational Programs and Operation Levy, the four-year Technology and Safety Capital Levy and the two-year Transportation Capital Levy.
Superintendent Jim Fry said the work session discussed the importance of effective planning to handle College Place’s expected growth, which continues at a steady rate. In just the past five years, College Place has averaged over $25 million in new construction each year.
After a discussion on the next steps for the February 2022 election, the board requested Fry put together a resolution for the November 23 regular board meeting. Fry was asked to develop a resolution that would eliminate both the Technology and Safety and Transportation Capitol levies and set a single four-year Educational Programs and Operations levy at $2.50 per $1,000 of assessed value, which is 10 cents lower than the current overall levied rate of $2.60 per $1,000 of assessed value.
Further details will be made available after the formal resolution is approved at the November 23 regular board meeting.
