PPD is cracking down on school zone speedsters

PENDLETON – Pendleton Police Chief Chuck Byram says that maybe people forgot how to drive with COVID-19 shutting down schools most of last year. Pendleton patrol officers are noticing an increase in the number of people who are speeding in school zones.

“We’ve definitely seen an uptick in speed-related issues in school zones, not only among adults but children at the high school,” he said.

Byram said his department has received a number of complaints from citizens regarding the high school drivers. Lt. Tony Nelson went up to PHS just to check things out on Monday, and was very busy.

“Lt. Nelson ended up making six traffic stops for speed-related issues in a matter of a half hour,” Byram said. “It’s an issue that we’re sensitive to, and it’s one that we’re going to rectify whether it’s with warnings or citations. It needs to stop.”
