Speed limit to drop on two more streets

HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council has approved slowing things down on portions of West Highland Avenue and on West Hermiston Avenue. Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said one is a former county road and the other was once a state highway.
The speed limit will now be 25 miles per hour on West Highland Avenue between Southwest 11th Street and Southwest 15th Place. Morgan said people who live in the area had requested the change due to the ongoing development there.
“We’ve had about 30 homes go in there,” he said. “We’ve had a gas station, a mini-storage, a car wash, and now Dollar General’s going in.”
The portion of West Hermiston Avenue that will become 25 miles per hour is between Northwest Fourth Street and Northwest 11th Street.
In July, the council approved lowering the speed on a portion of East Diagonal Boulevard. City employees say with that move, the city received a request to lower the speed on West Highland. That prompted staff to look into other speed limits that might not align with Hermiston’s city speed limit of 25.
