KENNEWICK — Forensic testing of shotgun shells recovered in last week’s arson and homicides in the Tri-Cities area show they were all fired from the same weapon used by suspect, Ryan Kaufman, 43.

According to a news release, shotgun shells were recovered from each scene during the investigation of the arsons and the homicide on South Gum Street. Shotgun shells were also recovered from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers buildings that were the result of Kaufman using a shotgun to break the exterior doors of the buildings to gain entry.

Using the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, an investigation has shown Kaufman was in possession of a shotgun at the IBEW building on North Edison Street during the arson.

Kennewick Police allege that Kaufman was behind the fiery rampage from Finley to West Richland last week. His parents and one of his neighbors were shot and killed. Another neighbor was injured.

Kaufman also allegedly set fires to two IBEW buildings and it’s believed he perished when his truck caught fire during a gun battle with police in West Richland. It is important to note that the body in the truck has not been officially identified as being Kaufman. Four officers are on paid administrative leave due to that shooting

The Kennewick Police Department continues to evaluate evidence from the scene of where Kaufman’s parents were found on the 4300 block of South Gum Street.
