HEPPNER – Morrow County District Attorney Justin Nelson says it’s the time of year when motorists need to forget their summer commutes and pay attention to the roads.
“Watch out for the students walking to school,” he said. “Watch out for the school buses.”
Nelson said that kids are out of practice as well and could tend to dart into roads as they walk to school.
“They might not always be using the crosswalks, they might jump out, so be aware,” he said. “Keep your eyes open.”
Nelson isn’t alone in his warnings. They are echoed by first responders and city officials nationwide. It’s estimated that 100 students are killed and 25,000 are injured in school zones every year.
