Munck is honored by district attorneys

BEND – The Oregon District Attorneys Association held its summer conference this year in Bend. Morrow County District Attorney Justin Nelson said one of the highlights was watching Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus and former Chief Deputy District Attorney Jaclyn Jenkins present the Victims Champions Award to Bailey Munck of Athena.
“Ms. Munck worked hard, along with her family, to pass Bailey’s Bill,” Nelson said. “It holds teachers to the same accountability and penalty for sex abuse against students as was in place for coaches.”
Bailey’s Bill passed the Oregon Senate unanimously and then was bogged down at the committee level with the House of Representatives. While the committee chairwoman said it would not come for a hearing, the rest of the committee representing both parties voted to override that decision and demand a hearing. It was approved by the committee and then passed the House of Representatives unanimously as well.
Bailey’s Bill is now Bailey’s Law. It was signed by Gov. Kate Brown on June 30. Jenkins is now a U.S. attorney in Portland.
Nelson said the conference in Bend also included timely discussions regarding fentanyl overdose cases, bias crimes, and updates to appellate law. It was the first in-person event sponsored by the association in about 18 months.
