OLYMPIA – Twelve Republican senators from Washington state, including Perry Dozier of Waitsburg, have signed a letter to the state senate majority leader urging a procedural vote in the Senate’s Rules committee to call a special legislative session.

Under the state constitution, the Legislature has the power to call itself into session. In joint rules adopted this year by the House and Senate, the process begins with a resolution submitted to the Rules Committee.

Senator Phil Fortunato (R-Auburn) wrote a letter to the Senator majority leader urging a procedural vote in the Senate’s Rules committee. He is leading efforts to have the Washington Legislature call itself into session in unprecedented fashion.

“For the first time in say history, we are going to initiate that process to make that happen. So actually, get that to a vote of legislators on whether or not they want to convene to discuss certain topics,” Fortunato wrote.

Fortunato wants lawmakers to address the seemingly endless state of emergency, unilateral COVID responses, and the public safety fiasco created by legislative Democrats. The Washington Legislature has the power to call itself into session, although it never has. Fortunato submitted two resolutions to get the ball rolling.
