Grant School Dist. 3 advocates for local control in schools

JOHN DAY – (The following is a letter from Grant School Dist. 3 Superintendent Bret Uptmor)

Our district team was finalizing our plans for the 2021-22 school year when Governor Brown
announced she was directing OHA and ODE to create rules requiring masks at K-12 schools.
Our preparation for the school year was predicated on us having local control of decisions
impacting COVID spread in our school. I believe we can provide the safest learning
environment using our data to assess the danger of COVID in our district. My position is to stand
for local control of decisions impacting the health of our students. My advocacy for local control
started shortly after learning the surprising turnaround from Governor Brown. Please reinforce
my advocacy by making contact with your representatives and state officials. The board will be
discussing our plan and a parent letter at the board meeting August 3 at 6:00. Please send me
your input prior to the board meeting.
