KENNEWICK – The Walla Walla District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $4 million contract to TDX Power Services, LLC to begin an ecosystem restoration project on Clover Island. In a partnership between the Port of Kennewick and USACE, the project seeks to improve the habitat important to four Endangered-Species-Act-listed salmonid species, as well as provide benefits to other birds, wildlife, and aquatic species at Clover Island.
As the habitat vegetation grows, it is expected to attract food sources, such as insects, for juvenile salmon to feed, and to provide shade that cools water temperatures along the north shoreline of the Columbia River where juvenile salmon will rest and feed as they migrate to the Pacific Ocean.
“It is great to work on a project that provides benefits to the environment and also improves the quality of life in the local area, and now that the planning and design phases are completed, and we have the funds available, this ecosystem restoration project will move into the construction phase this fall,” Corps Project Manager Rebecca Kalamasz said.
The project is cost-shared between the USACE and the Port of Kennewick, with funding also contributed by the city of Kennewick, Benton County, and a grant from the state of Washington.
