HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council has approved lowering the speed limit on a section of East Diagonal Boulevard as well as changing one intersection to a four-way stop. The changes were passed as an emergency measure, which means they go into effect as soon as the signage is placed.
Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said the city council took the action because of two housing projects coming to the area.
“One is the 200-space Santiago manufactured home park that’s in development currently,” he said. “They should begin placing homes here within the next couple of months.”
The other project is the 100 homes proposed for the Diamond Run subdivision.
The speed limit on East Diagonal will be lowered from 35 to 25 miles per hour. In addition, the city is installing a four-way stop sign at the intersection of East Diagonal and Northwest 10th.
Morgan said the changes are going into effect quickly to give motorists a chance to get used to them.
“We really want to make sure that we get those revisions up and in place before the beginning of the school year because this is all in pretty close proximity to Sandstone Middle School,” he said.
