PASCO – Some boaters enjoying the Tri-City Water Follies got a bit of a surprise when they began returning to shore Sunday. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said when the boaters were pulling up their anchor, it caught a ladder that was on the bottom of the Columbia River. The ladder appears to be from the Blue Bridge.

Originally named the Pioneer Memorial Bridge, the blue arch-truss bridge was completed in the summer of 1954 at a cost of $7 million. It carries U.S. 395 over the Columbia River and connects the cities of Pasco and Kennewick.

The find has generated some comments on the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, including whether an inspection of the bridge is necessary.

“The ladder was taken to shore and DOT has been notified,” Franklin County Sheriff Commander Rick Rochleau said.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is investigating.
