PENDLETON – COVID-19 isn’t the only disease with a vaccine. Umatilla County Public Health Department Deputy Director Alisha Lundgren reminds parents that as the new school year approaches, they should make sure their children’s vaccinations are up-to-date.

“An important age to think about is going into kindergarten or seventh grade,” she said. “There are really key vaccines that are required for school that are due at those age groups.”

Lundgren said that any children 12 or older can also be vaccinated against COVID-19 at the same time, but stresses the importance of the vaccines that are required by public schools.

“Those help to protect you against a variety of illnesses that for the last several decades we’ve been working on preventing the spread of in our community and across the nation,” she said.

Those illnesses include polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles, and hepatitis.
