PENDLETON – Ever since Umatilla County Commissioner George Murdock was elected to his current term he has made it clear that it will be his last term on the board. He made the announcement early to give potential candidates a chance to consider running. He also will not pick a favorite in the race.
“I think it’s really important that this be a vote of the people and not colored by what I think or even what the other commissioners think,” he said.
Murdock said that the election should be decided by the will of the people and not by the power of political endorsements.
“I’m quite certain that my colleagues – Commissioners (Dan) Dorran and (John) Shafer – will also not endorse somebody, because they’re going to have to work with whoever gets elected,” Murdock said.
Murdock’s term expires Dec. 31, 2022. If more than two candidates file for the seat, a primary will be held in May 2022 with the top two making the November ballot. If two or fewer file, it will be on the ballot in the general election in November of next year.
