PENDLETON – The Pendleton School District Board of Directors has approved three athletic agreements with area high schools. They are Nixyaawii Community School, Weston-McEwen High School in Athena, and Griswold High School in Helix.
Pendleton Superintendent Chris Fritsch says a great deal of study goes into the agreements before they are brought to the board.
“These need to be win-win situations in a sense of yes it can benefit the students that are coming from a smaller school, but we don’t want to also take spots away from our own kids that may have been working for years to be a member of a team,” he said.
Each agreement is only good for one school year.
“Who knows, these may work out to every year,” Fritsch said. “We take our time. We try to study the numbers and make sure it’s going to work for everybody.”
The agreement with Griswold is for football, wrestling, baseball, softball, and girls and boys golf. Girls soccer and girls swimming are the two sports agreed upon with Weston-McEwen. Football and wrestling are the sports at Nixyaawii. “We always have a priority with Nixyaawii,” Fritsch said. “They’re Pendleton kids. We’ll always welcome them.”
