PENDLETON – The Oregon Department of Education’s reopening guidance late last month was predominantly one of suggestions, not orders. Pendleton School Superintendent Chris Fritsch says the district must put together a plan for the 2021-22 school year that is approved by the Umatilla County Health Department.

Masks will be a matter of choice. In addition, vaccinations are encouraged but not required.

“We think we’ve proven, and we think that the health department will support us and back us up, that schools were not the super spreaders that they were feared to be,” Fritsch said.

The district is waiting until next week to know whether its suggestions will fly. On July 22, the ODE will release its final opening guidance asking for a specific opening plan. “We think that plan template is really going to expose some detailed requirements,” Fritsch said.
