PENDLETON – The city of Pendleton now has an ordinance dealing with shopping carts and is moving forward to make the city’s resting ordinance comply with state law.
The shopping cart ordinance was written at the request of Police Chief Chuck Byram. Mayor John Turner said the ordinance was the result of research in other Oregon communities with a similar set of rules.
“If we discover an abandoned cart out in town someplace, we can call the business and say, ‘It is here at the corner of X and Y, please come get it,” Mayor John Turner said. “They have 12 hours to come get it or we will confiscate it.”
Also at this week’s council meeting the process of changing the city’s resting ordinance was begun with a first reading of the proposed change. The reason for the change is that the Oregon Legislature adopted a new regulation, and the city has to comply with state law.
“Our law said after 24 hours we could confiscate their camping gear,” Turner said. “The new law says 72 hours.”
