Law enforcement agencies in Oregon and Washington will begin emphasis patrols targeting boaters under the influence beginning today (Friday). Boaters are asked to keep everyone on the water safe by avoiding alcohol or marijuana while on the water, especially if operating a boat or paddle craft.
Through the Fourth of July, agencies will participate in Operation Dry Water, which is a national effort that seeks to educate the public about the dangers of boating under the influence as well as inform them about the laws regarding BUI.
In both Oregon and Washington it is illegal to operate a water-going vessel with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more, the same as it is to operate a motor vehicle. Boating under the influence is considered to be the leading contributed factor in fatal recreational boating accidents, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
