HERMISTON – Hermiston has not canceled its public fireworks display on the butte. Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said the city has engaged a commercially-licensed vendor who could cancel the show due to winds, but that’s not possible to predict at this time.
The butte is ready. Firefighters from throughout Umatilla County helped Hermiston get ready for the pyrotechnics by performing the annual Burn of the Butte this week.
“We’re very thankful to all of the brave, hardworking firefighters from Umatilla County Fire District No. 1, Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District, Echo Fire Department, Pilot Rock Fire District, and Pendleton Fire and Ambulance,” Morgan said of the operation that burned all the dry grasses in the area.
The city of Hermiston and its Parks and Recreation Department is unveiling the completely rebuilt Funland Playground at Butte Park on the Fourth of July at 1 p.m. The $1.75 million playground will be one of the largest and most inclusive playgrounds in the region.
It is built with fire-resistant materials to protect it for the future. The construction was paid for by community support as well as insurance payments form the previously destroyed playground. Service clubs including Rotary, Kiwanis, and the Lions played an integral role in the fundraising and development of the structure. They are also providing free refreshments at the ceremony.
